Microsoft Office 2007 File Formats Vs. Microsoft Office 2003, etc...

Posted: 15:45. Wednesday, February 21, 2007

Here is the Situation:
You are running Microsoft Outlook 2003 as your e-mail client. A trusted individual sends you an e-mail message with a file attachment you cannot open. The file attachment is blah-blah.DOCX. You attempt to open the file attachment but you are presented with a message about downloading a tool to open the DOCX file.

What Is Going On?
If you have NOT updated to Microsoft Office 2007 and are running an older version of Office you may encounter this problem. The default file format in Office 2007 has changed to XML (Extension Mark-up Language).

Solution:
In order to read and write Office 2007 Word Documents, Excel Spreadsheets and PowerPoint Slides in previous versions of Office you must first download and install the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats ". You can find more information about the Compatibility Pack at www.Microsoft.com/office and you can download it at www.Microsoft.com/downloads .

Tech Notes:
Microsoft warns..."Users of the Microsoft Office XP and 2003 programs Word, Excel, or PowerPoint—please install all High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack. ".

After installing the Compatibility Pack the installation process required a system reboot.
